Current role: English Subject Leader and Senior Teacher at The Mead Community Primary School, Trowbridge
I began my teaching career in 2002 in inner city Birmingham. In 2005, I joined The Mead Community Primary School. I have taught in Years 1-5 and supported English planning, teaching and assessment in Year 6.
In 2008 I joined the English team at The Mead. I now lead English across the Academy Trust. I am passionate about all areas of English teaching and learning and have a particular interest in ‘Talk for Writing’ and story making, Writing, Mantle of the Expert and drama.
Part of my subject leader role is to support colleagues from other schools as part of our National Support School role. In this role I have supported planning, team taught lessons, taught modelled lessons focusing on shared and guided writing, supported assessments, moderated writing level judgements, implemented literature circles/reciprocal reading, supported use of paired discussion and learning triads and supported teachers to use learning walls and role play.
I facilitate English meetings for Trowbridge Collaborative Schools Limited and have led training for Bath Spa University, Schools Direct Trainees and English Subject Leaders from other schools. I also run English training sessions for NQTs locally.
As an SLE I am able to offer wide-ranging support including supporting teachers with planning, teaching and marking, identifying next steps and setting targets to ensure progress, supporting new English Subject Leaders to develop their role, to implement drama strategies including Mantle of the Expert and developing role play areas, to use ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies to enhance English lessons and to guide the development of the learning environment to include management of successful learning walls.
